There’s a huge difference between training to build muscle mass (lean mass) vs increasing work capacity (simply doing more work) for the sake of it.
Muscle ups are neat to watch but ironically they’re not great for building muscle. To perform them you have to be quite efficient with your movement. If you watch someone whose really good at muscle ups (not me lol) they look like they’re barely exerting any effort. Rather, they’re harnessing momentum to minimize fatigue & ultimately complete more reps.
Training to a build muscle is essentially the opposite. You’re trying to place your muscle under a great deal of mechanical tension through an exercise’s particular range of motion. I.e you’re trying to make the exercise inefficient & create localized fatigue. Peep the struggle bus in the 2nd vid.
A lot the people who reach out to me for coaching mention things like “ I train 5 days a week for an hour but I don’t feel like I look lean/tone/strong.”
Firstly that’s a very subjective thing to measure. However, most of the time when people say something along those lines they just mean they want more noticeable lean mass. That’s easy to measure objectively.
That requires a commitment to literally building enough lean mass to create physical shape & definition. If you’re training 5 hours a week like me, that probably comes at the cost of a less impressive work capacity as you’ll need to prioritize some time under tension.
Unfortunately 99% people skip over the building lean mass phase & skip right to the “I need to lose __ lbs to lean out ASAP” phase. Or the “I have to be able to do (some arbitrary #)
muscle ups” phase.
Simply put, building a “lean physique” requires a period focused on building up rather than cutting down. On prioritizing quality over quantity.
I can’t count how many times someone has said to me “ I want abs like _____ athlete” but they won/t commit to a period of training & eating that is purposed to literally building said abs.
SUPER excited to announce in a few weeks I’ll be launching a full training & nutrition group coaching program focused on building lean body mass. It’s gonna be badass! Stay tuned 💪
